Allison Caldwell Kindt of Raleigh, North Carolina and Angie Caldwell Buxton of
Daniel Island, South Carolina, co-owners of Sweet Charleston Designs, LLC, have launched the
new "Sweetgrass" fine jewelry line inspired by the sweetgrass baskets made in the
Low country of South Carolina.
Sweet Charleston Designs, LLC has developed a line of fine jewelry honoring the art
of the sweetgrass baskets made locally around Charleston and the low country of
South Carolina. The line of fine jewelry has a design similar to the sweetgrass
basket weave in sterling silver and 18k gold. It is an original and classic line of
fine jewelry that is representative of the charm and history of the sweetgrass
baskets art form, the culture and the area of Charleston, South Carolina.
Sweetgrass basket making, also known as weaving, is one of the oldest forms of
African art found in America today. It can be traced back over 300 years to
descendants of West Africans brought into South Carolina. The baskets are hand
woven out of sweet grass, bulrush, palmetto tree fronds, and pine needles, all of
which grow locally in the low country.
Sweet Charleston Designs hopes to bring education and awareness to the
beautiful, historical art of sweetgrass basket weaving and the extremely talented
basketmakers through the development of their fine jewelry line.
